I heard about this a few years back.
Sorry to hear those guys are still fighting with the government/FBI.

That's the problem. You can't even trust law enforcement.

I read somewhere that the U.S. claims all gold from the civil war as government property, North or South.

That’s absurd. A guy in KY found 7-800 gold coins that were clearly civil war related. He had them graded and sold them all. This included rare 1863 double eagles. Those were clearly paid by the gov during the war to a private individual for goods or services.

the FBI wouldn't have been there if they weren't 100% sure the gold was there...

The Kentucky find can't be traced back to the gold being owned by either the Union or Confederate government.

Maybe I said it incorrectly, if it was either Union or Confederate owned gold the government can claim it.
Not just gold from the time period.

The find in Pennsylvania, if I remember correctly, is thought to be a Federal Gold shipment that the Union Soldiers hide because they heard confederate soldiers were in the area. Hence it made it property of the U.S. government. That's why the treasure hunters called the FBI in.
In 1862 they issued a law, that made all Confederate Gold subject to confiscation by the U.S. government. If it is Confederate gold. The U.S. government can legally claim it's theirs.

So, if you find Gold, that may have been owned by the confederacy, .... Well, you decide how you want to handle it.

That KY cache in the farmers field was believed to have been hidden due to the fear of banks and war . Never knew how it was aquired.
