Hey all!

I recently started collecting US paper currency. I ran across a woman I work with. Her husband recently passed away and he collected US money for 50 years. She said she had some paper notes she will bring in for me to look at. I wasnt expecting CONFEDERATE MONEY!!! Theres a 100 dollar bill, 10 dollar bill, 5, and a 1 dollar bill. The 5 and 10 are in excellent shape! I felt of them and examined them well they appear to be legit to me and everyone else I have shown them to. Thought I would get yall's 2 cents on them. I paid 50.00 for all 4 notes.

The $5 is definitely a fake too. A good tip with these is to Google the serial number. Originals were all numbered differently, the fakes usually made them with the same, so if you find others with the same number it is a definite fake.

X-Ring on the serial numbers if you are near a computer.

If you are interested in purchasing real Confederate notes, look at a few real ones in a respectable shop first. The paper should be the first obvious tip off. Another tip off is the perfect margins. The margins on genuine notes will not be perfect, like those above, as they were hand cut.

If you look close you will find the word "Facimile' on each note, i have some fakes just like them. kane 23

I will have to admit that I am crushed, however I learned some valuable tips for next goaround. This way I know what I am looking for. Thanks guys for all the great advice! It was fun while it lasted. hehe. take care all :icon_thumright:

Sorry to be the buzz-kill, and don't beat yourself up over this. Life is full of lessons; enjoy the notes for what they are, and use the learning experience in your future collecting acquisitions.
Live and learn; don't let it dampen your enthusiasm for history and collecting.
Good luck!

Ok now I am going to dig out all my notes and check them. Thanks for sharing as we all have learned from it.

Sorry that the paper money didn't work out for you. :'(

I think I'll stick to "diggin"!

Well that blows.... :-\

Too bad, but I thought they looked too well trimmed and centered on the paper. Bet they were printed in the 1960's during the centenial celebration.

These were made by the Whitman Publishing Co. When I was 11, back in 1961, you could buy packs of these as "play money" in some dime stores. You got a 3/4" thick stack of bills, in $1, $5, $10, $20, $50 and $100 denominations. We thought they were cool at the time as they looked real, old, and were bigger than the other play money out there. I think they cost 50 cents a pack or so. I had about 5 packets of these at one time. Dad threw them out (along with all my cap pistols and comic books >:( ) when I got an apartment. I wish I had them today. They're still cool reproductions and were a lot of fun to play poker with.

got burned on this type of thing before myself... lots of good fakes... chalk it up to experience

One dead give away for the facsimiles is the even margins. All of the original confederate bills were cut out by hand...not by machine. They will make a nice wall display in a picture frame.
