Thanks. Apparently they were in NY before moving to the midwest. It is a little larger than a Civil War belt plate, and as we were looking for a CW site, you know what we first thought. The scratch can be retouched with no issues, if I ever get around to it, that is.
That's cool. This probably came off a piece of farm machinery. (Think I'll pass on the catalog.) The patent office would have the original prints, but again, too much bother. Thank you for your help.

These are the backs of the two 19th century buttons found on the same property. Nothing much, but better than nothing. Someone had hammered the house in the past.
