I haven't posted in quite a while. Hunting has been very slow here sense silver hit about $40. last spring, it seamed like everyone and there dogs started hunting then. I have been finding one here and one there.

But today was different. in fact it has been a good week Wednesday hit 6 of 8 banks before a doctors apt. and found a dirty rim 64 and a 68. Today I hit another 10 banks searched about $650. $200 or more was someone's dumps. One teller roll had a 68 I saw right off and as I was rolling that 20 coins around in my hand I saw the silver 64. It had the most copper colored edge I have ever seen on a 90% coin. If I had only looked at the edge, I would have passed it up as a 1990"s or 2000 coin.

I wish I could have gotten a pic. I soak all my keepers (even though it's just junk silver) in lemon juice and dish soap, with a hot water rinse, to kill the germs. Now it just looks real dirty. Looks like a brand new coin (no scratches or wear) just a very dirty edge.

total find today 1 90% 4 40% 2 and 5 for the week.

As Rileyboy says "It is still out there" HH

Nice finds, but just so you know, the silver KILLS all the germs... So does Copper

Most likely it's toning.. some silver coins will tone and orange is one of the first colors in the process.

+1

Metal oxides can appear in various colors as many of them (AgO2 included) are photosensitive and reactive with trace gases and atmospheric compounds.

Silver Oxide (AgO2) is actually brown (so as SFB indicated, it looks Orangish as it forms). Most of us are familiar with it being more black. That is because it readily absorbs the black C from CO2. (That makes it an effective "scrubber" for turning CO2 into O2 on space craft.)

Thanks for the info, Madwest and SFBayarea. That coloring probably caused an untold number of edge hunters to miss it. It was a surprise to me. Thanks

Now if you get nice rainbow coloring on an uncirculated coin.. you might get some moon money on ebay for it.

I can't believe you soak all your silver! :(

Sure they look all bright and new but any real history that they've experience is gone forever. I like finding shiny silver more than dirty silver but I doubt someone cleans their coins before dumping them, so it's the original shine. I dunno to each their own I suppose. I am very curious to see the copper-ish looking edge but oh well.

HH man and good luck!
