I usually break bills when I'm out doing any shopping because I like to look through the change for some silver, copper or rare coins.

Up until afew weeks ago I was finding 1982 and older copper pennies about 70% of the time when I got change.
Lately I've been getting alot of new design pennies and hardly any copper ones.
I wonder if the mint is already sorting the copper out or if there are some copper sorters in my area.
If you had the time and a place to dump loads of zinc pennies, a Rydale or other copper penny sorting maching would pay off quick.
Copper pennies are worth almost 3 times their face value.

Copper is Rising right now over $4.00 per pound

a copper cent is worth $0.0269057 right now.

I Still cash them in the coin counters

I started sorting/saving coppers a couple years ago. I've noticed that they are getting fewer and further between as compared to when I first started. I don't know if they are being forcibly removed or what. All I know is they aren't as plentiful as they were a couple years ago.

I Think the real reason is people don't spend pennies.

99% Of pennies going accross the store counter are Going
to the Customers, not to the stores.

They go in Jugs, Car ash trays, Etc.
& The mint is continuing to mint them.

Only pennies being recycled are through the machines
when somone takes the time to cash some in.
& Shipped to the mint or wherever.

Jeff, that is true to some extent however I'm sure there are a few people out there sorting through thousands of dollars worth of pennies a week. If you has a few supply banks, a sorter and a place to dump you could probably pull in a decent profit. It's a pain and dirty but isn't most work

Yes I Guess even though Melting pennies & Nickels
is Illegal
there are a few buyers still

Dumping them and using them is tough. No coin counters in my area so I have to roll them. Tough to spend $25 worth at one place. I've used $3-5 rolled at a time at gas stations and grocery stores. Costco, I've used up $17 worth at once which is the most I've spent using zincolns. Takes up the majority of my time. If I have a better way of exchanging them for cash.. I would be all in on this.

I wasrunning 18% a year ago, and am running 16% now. the 2010 pennies are added ot the mix, so that means less of all others, so less copper. NOt much les though. At least not here.

My yields have been steady, 22-26% Cu, over 2010. When I started in 2004 I averaged 25-28%. But some of that is time, the ratio of zinc to Cu pennies will increase due to more zinc getting minted. I don't think the ryedales are making that much of a dent, yet.
