Went into the gas station last night for a cold drink, and paid with a twenty. When I got my change, I was surprised to see this among the 5's. Doubt if it's worth much more than $5, but unusual nonetheless.

Back in the day, you could take that red seal US note to the bank and exchange it for GOLD or SILVER. They were made in denominations of $1, $2, $5, and $100, and ceased to exist after 1963 I believe. Your bill is worth more than $5. It has some wear and writing on it, but I'd say it's worth about $15. A mint one would fetch about $300. Rare for one to be floating around in circulation. Great save!

I would be happy to trade it in for 10 Franklin half dollars right about now....

Yes the red seal was a United States Note. Not a Federal Reserve Note. Some kid probably raided his fathers collection. Nice

You can get these off Fee-Bay for under 15.00 each and you are willing to part with 67.30 of silver for one?? May we ask why??

1 $5 00 Series 1963 United States Note AU Circulated Condition | eBay

Anyone would trade a bill worth $10 for $67 in silver! Rather what he's saying, was $5 in silver back in the day would have been a much better investment than a $5 paper bill.

I once got a series 1920something (or was it 30 something?) $20 bill in change. I was ecstatic and rushed to eBay to see what it's worth. Saw one that sold for something like $22 with free shipping. After eBay fees and Paypal fees, the guy netted less than $20 for a $20 bill. Needless to say it went back into circulation. But if someone offered me a nice $20 St. Gaudens (which is what was in circulation during that time), I would have taken it!

Its always nice to find stuff like that still in circulation. Nice find.

No, I already have it. I would trade it for 67.30 of silver.

DAAAA, I think I need to take reading lessons! Or my old age is getting to me. That is my story and I am sticking too it.

And no disrespect to the Franklins, I would take a few of those Walkers you keep finding in trade as well. You must be running out of room for them about now, no?
