My Cortes got here yesterday. Got an awesome deal from another Tnet member. I am very excited to get out and try it. Question: Does the machine have to be ground balanced every time I turn it on? Or only if I experience high mineralization? In other words is manual ground balance an option that i can choose not to use. Does the machine turn on and its in a pre set GB? Anxiously, Shane

The ground balance only works in the all metal mode.
In disc mode I don't think it matters but I would do it
anyway..

I figured it out. Amazing what reading a manual can do! LOL Cheers, Shane

Thinking of getting a used Cortes, please post how its working for you.

I just received my new Cortes yesterday. I previously owned an XLT, sold it because it was too heavy and it was a nuisance to scroll through menus to change settings; and a F4, which felt like more of a toy and couldn't pinpoint worth a darn.

First impressions of the Cortes were just great. Nicely balanced with battery pack on the arm rest and light enough to swing all day. Threw some coins out in the snow and found them easily. No need to pinpoint in all metal, spot on target with discrimination only. Depth indicator seemed to be accurate. Target ID, so so. Will definitely need to practice to learn the codes and the auto sum feature. Most coins ring in accurately as 95's, but indian heads and some foreign coins came up with some strange numbers. The Cortes is keeper for sure.

Susanmn,
Thanks for the review, I can't wait for the Cortes to get here! I also have owned an XLT and then a DFX. Both great machines but I sold them when the novelty wore off metal detecting a few years ago. Bought a used Whites 5900 before Xmas and got an Ace 250 as a back up for Xmas. Love the 5900 but is to heavy and bothers my shoulder. After reading all the good things about Tesoro's I figured I'd start at the top of the line! I'll be looking for more post from you and others on there Cortes!

Glad you got the new detector Shane! I wonder if it would find a herd of buffalo any easier then the others that were with us?? lol I am sure you will love the new machine!

Oh CYN.....I posted this before the fla. hunt. I used it out there, but obviously no luck.

Been using my Cortes more than 2 years for coins and jewelry. So easy to use, love it. Have 5 coils, had the 10 x 12 concentric but sold it because it didn't get any extra depth on coins smaller than a quarter. The tones in the SUM mode correspond to the Bar segments so I don't need the tones that much, but often I use SUM to stabilize the meter reading when pinpointing a target in Disc mode. All Metal mode goes a lot deeper and wider too, great to use in non trashy areas of the park, All Metal mode doesn't miss much. The printed titles under the bars are impossible to read so I made this paper stick-on title using Microsoft Excel, then coated it with polyurathane spray.

Tykit,

Wow! You really tricked up that Cortez of yours. Hey Shangealang, feel free to PM me if you have any questions on the Cortez. Joe
