Couldn't bring this artifact home.

"Filtered" this shelter in the early spring. Mostly just potholing. didn't find much maybe 15-20 pcs flint & 1-2 scrapers. I guess I dug about 1 1/2 ft or so. I'm hoping there is something deeper. Saving going back for a rainy day, when I have time to put a day or 2 into digging it completely out. Just too bad I can't drag out that boulder they used for a mortar. That would look good sitting in my yard.

Re: Couldn't bring this artifact home.

They call them Hominy Holes in KY. There are loads of them in the RRG area.

Re: Couldn't bring this artifact home.

Thanks for the information on that. I didn't know they were called that. I googled hominy holes and read some about them. They say they are conical as this one is. What is RRG?

Re: Couldn't bring this artifact home.

what were they used for ?

Re: Couldn't bring this artifact home.

I read that despite being called hominy holes they were most likely used to grind nuts and such.

Re: Couldn't bring this artifact home.

I know what you mean they are interesting , I know where a big rock is on the bank of a creek near here with several holes in it :) but unfortunately it is too large to move :'(

Re: Couldn't bring this artifact home.

For what it's worth, dig out the area around the boulder. I've seen more than one nice pestle come from around boulders like that.

Now that sounds like a great idea!! I am thinking joshuaream could give us some lessons on digging :notworthy:.
Nice looking spot.I hope it produces for you. Hopefully I will get to hunt Sunday.
