Couldn't stand it

It was another beautiful day here in VA today and I had to try and go. 70 degrees at 2:30 so I said, the heck with it and took off early for a quick hunt. I went to the iron infested site that I hunt often because it is close to home. Found alot of iron as usual but my best find was my oldest coin to date as well as a first for me. It's a 1809 library half cent, in great shape. Also found some type of pin, maybe off of a saddle. Not sure. Can't wait for tomorrow, I'm stoked. Thanks for looking uploadfromtaptalk1449873304646.webpuploadfromtaptalk1449873325824.webp

Congrats on pulling that nice coin, :occasion14: older than any I have found. I sure am having a hard time finding a Library half cent on line though. :tongue3: I believe you dug a classic head. They started minting these in 1809, so you couldn't find any older.

Nice half cent there and I wonder too how that pin attached and stayed attached...and to what. Very cool.

Thanks LD. As you know, I'm not a coin guy so I appreciate the education. I just assumed that is what it was called. I was tickled pink.

Nice half cent! 1809 and 1810 half cents have a nice strong date

The dont pop up everyday.

Nice will be heading to va. Tuesday and Wednesday going to Cheasapeake to fix some work items on punch list will have some time one of those days let me know if we can hunt for a few hours one of thoses days

Congrats on pulling a really awesome coin. She's a beauty too!

awesome find!! Congrats!

I'm a little jealous very nice coin

I've found some neat stuff before, but I haven't found a 1/2 cent yet. Nice find. Now, speaking from experience here, the condition of this coin creates a quandary...to hydrogen peroxide it or not. Leaving the vertigris on it creates a problem in that it will, over time and very slowly, eat away at the copper; but, a hot hydrogen peroxide bath will make the coin darker and can greatly reduce the eye appeal (revealing pits and even flake off some of the weaker surface copper). It is a great find.

To stop the verdigris, a nice soak in acetone is advised, do not use finger nail polish remover

Nice snag. I found that exact coin not more than a month ago. Most half cents don't fare too well in the ground so yours is looking good.
