i found this today along side of a trench that runs through the property that i just got to hunt.

It looks like a severely rusted RR spike.

thats what i thought until i cleaned it up. but it was made to be what it is. whatever it is lol.
it has hammer marks all of the way to the point.

At two inches I don't think tent peg or railroad spike, but even though I think I've seen one before, for the life of me, I can't remember anything about it.

looks like it might be driven into a log as a tag to mark the company or person that felled it. of coarse it would be removed at the mill before sawing. does it look like a initial or number may have been on it?

No markings of any kind. this property is really old.
the barn is built with hand cut nails and wooden pins. dated 1811.

Every now and then a post comes up titled "tent spike?" or something to that extent. A lot have turned out to be sickle mower spikes commonly used on farms. Check out some pics to see if there's a match. Good luck

could be a furniture upholstery tack..i've seen some that are pretty big

Had this thing looked at yesterday along with a handful of other relics that i have dug.
turns out that the spike is hand forged and was commonly used for wagon building during the 1700 and 1800's.
the value is 0 but it is still a good piece to add to my collection for a conversation piece.

That is a pretty wild stab by whoever told you it was a wagon spike. All of the above ideas are equally as valid. The head looks way too large to me for wagon construction. I passed through Winchester yesterday, nice area you are in!!
