Cracked into the 1700's

At last I got a permission to hunt an ole farm but the weather frustrated me a bit. It was all showers and hail with only a couple of short intervals to swing my coil around. Yet I managed to break my detecting record and finally I cracked into the 1700's. My very first signal was very sweet, though too big for a silver. I kept wondering what it was until I undug a cool harness mount ca 18th century. Immediately after that, literally, several steps away from my first target I got another sweet large signal. This time I was better prepared for miracles and wasn't disappointed at all. There came out a King size double loop rectangular harness buckle with a shield shaped frame and an offset strap bar. BTW, I've invented a new technique of taking photos ... handless :laughing9: :laughing9: :laughing9:

Re: Cracked into the 1700's

Love the condition of these, the buckle looks like it just fell out of a dresser drawer! :icon_thumright: Is the Double Loop Rectangular Buckle marked COWAN as well? It looks as though the Harness Mount you found is made of brass . . . whereas the one in the UK Finds Database is made of lead. Either way great looking finds mate! :notworthy:

Great buckle, massive
It was from Gulliver's little horsie, Robert ;D It dwarfs my other buckles a bit.

Yeah, Antiquarian, the condition is just amazing. The buckle isn't marked 'Cowan' but in all other respects they seem identical. The Boss is made of pewter or of lead just like in the UK Finds Database.

Hi, Pepperj. I went there on Saturday and stayed overnight because it's a long journey from where I'm. On the top of these finds, I pulled out a lot of good thingies. I will post them later if I have time.

Nice Boss & Buckle, must be like us getting Iron Age

I know - you, British and other European(especially Spanish) guys, are spoilt. We, DownUnderers, are disadvantaged.

No, it's once in a lifetime find here. May be those things were common in Britain but as Cru put it for Australia it's a prehistoric period. It could have belonged only to early expeditions such as of George Vancouver or of some French ones.

Believe me, John, you're doing above average. Just a bit of patience and you don't know what will come out next. NZ might have a lot of secrets to unveil
