Hello fellows. I have had my Tejon for two years now and absolutely love it. This machine has found many old interesting coins for me and relics going back to the late 1700's. My current dilemma\puzzlement though is having the Tejon pop\tick on a fairly regular basis sometimes. I haven't experienced this often, but it has happened. This is the scenario: Normally I'm detecting on rich black loam close to the Boreal forest. This time I was far down south on the Canadian prairies, close to Montana. The soil here is mildly mineralized. I was carrying my Tejon horizontally by the shaft with the coil hip height, and she still steadily does a small regular pop in the headphones. Batteries are at least six beeps, on site ground balance, I'm good at it now, lol. I was actually slightly pos. So...... will mineralized ground cause mild popping on a Tejon held about three feet off the ground or so ? I tried shutting off\on, backing off the sens from 9-6 or so, no go. I even took a battery pack out, then back in. I am not used to working mineralized ground. Is my problem as simple as that ? I had this continuous mild popping every few seconds before, but it was so long ago that I had almost forgotten about it. (This is different than the ticks while sweeping a coil over the ground, I can hold the T. horizontal and get this small steady popping ) It doesn't really bother me too much, but it will give my batteries a premature death. I have permissions for some interesting southern sites and would prefer not to listen to a constant slow chatter of pops as I'm walking and carrying it horizontal... or actualy detecting. Any comments, advice welcomed. Thank you.

First you should clean out your coil cover to make sure there is no black sand inside which will make it respond. Next you can't really help this but electronical interference like cell phone towers, your own cell phone and microwave towers, along with power lines can affect detectors. Read this report for better understanding, but your coil cover cleaning is your best bet. I am assuming your coil cable is not flopping around and the connection is tight. Also any bumps to the coil can cause this to happen. Try it with another coil. :coffee2:

Those are all good suggestions by Sandman.
I found in some cases that electric fencing can cause interference with a detector.

Thanks guys. I have been super busy lately and basicly grab the Tejon when I get a chance. I was out yesterday and picked up some silvers. 13 dime and 17 silver nickel. I swept the coil back and forth in a small creek the other day to clean it. The T. quietened down. I'll take the coil cover off soon and do a proper cleaning. The coil wire has always been wrapped and zip tied, so that's a non issue. Just being too lazy lately I guess. This is a great machine and I should give her a bit more attention cleaning wise now and then. I'll try to pop up a pic of yesterdays silvers. The old Canadian nickels, or "fish scales" as we call them are smaller and thinner than modern dimes. So I prize every one that I find. The T. pulled this one out of rock hard bone dry earth and it had a bit of depth to it.

Great finds glad to hear the machine is working better, I love those fishscales.

I finally took the coil cover off and cleaned the coil and cover thoroughly. Man there was a lot of crud in there from just two years ! She's stable again, thanks guys.
