Not sure what it is, but I think its damn nice!! Congrats!!

I'm pretty sure as far as plates go, that's one you want to find.... :icon_scratch:

Keep @ it and HH !! :hello2:

wish I could help but not familiar with it.sure would love to dig one of those up.congrats

looks similar to artillery cap insignia 1834 - 1851 to me...size matches up pretty close too. Maybe militia because it doesn't exactly match us regulation. Clipped corners on plates usually means it goes on a shako. That is a beautiful find, congratulations.
Now I realize your plate has more banding on the cannons. I have no idea what you have, but I can't find a matching image online. Good luck.

Thanks, I have been going through every relic book and searching online.. cant find a match. This was found at a house site, occupied from about 1800, maybe a little earlier, to the 1950s. The funniest part was, we went there to dig/clean up a huge bottle/trash dump. I found a silver button while digging bottles. So I decided to get out my V3. This place has been hunted 100s of times with metal detectors over the years. I dug this, one smashed bottle cap and the hollow, flattened top of a silver spoon. I had just said to one of the other people with me "no place is ever dug out", ;-)
The cannons are "fatter" like the early US hat plate, so I am thinking milita as well. Thanks for looking.

This might help some:

That is sort of like it. Mine is a single sheet of brass that was stamped. The back is clean enough to tell it did not have an applied loop and tongue. I saw a similar hat plate that had crossed rifles about the same size, it to was one piece of stamped brass. Thanks for the research!!

Also, mine is about the same width but only 2/3s the height and no attached device. I read up on these, post Civil War devices attached to blank sword belt plates.

This is killing me.. someone has to know the period and history of this?? Help!

Nice find, hope you can get and ID.

Can we see the back please?

Congratulations. Cant find anything exactly like that in any of my books. It will be interesting when someone finally nails it. I'm sure someone will. Great find.

The second picture i the back. Looks like thee "may" have been 4 wires soldered to it at one time.

I must be blind as a bat .. both photos look darned near identical to me.

I take that back.. the first pic is the reverse... the second in the front. The cannons crossing each other are reversed.
