As Deep and I have mentioned in various threads before, the medical treatment that both of us have received from the Veterans Administration Healthcare in our areas of the country has been excellent. In my case recently, I had major vascular surgery done four weeks ago today at the Dallas VA hospital and I could not have asked for, or gotten, better care anywhere. From the discovery that I needed this very serious surgery, up to and including the actual surgery, the surgeons, the ICU nurses and the nurses in the regular hospital room, my care was superb and everyone really cared about me and how I was doing during recovery. Oh yeah and the hospital food was really good too. During my 6 to 7 hour surgery the nursing staff also checked on my wife constantly and kept her updated on my situation and condition during the surgery.
I had an abdominal aortic aneurysm that the VA found in 2010. In 2010 it was 4.3 CM and had remained the same size every year until my CT scan this past January. That CT Scan showed that now it had grown to 5.6 CM in one year. Considering that all that growth had taken place in one year and that at 5.0 CM they become concerned and between 5.0 and 5.5 CM they become very concerned. At 5.6 CM the vascular surgery folks are telling you that you should have surgery ASAP. Keep in mind that if that type of aneurysm bursts, you die within 3 minutes usually.
Please know that the North Texas Veterans Healthcare system has a contract with UT Southwestern Medical System for most all the specialty surgeons and treatment specialists, although in many instances the surgeries are actually done at the Dallas VA Hospital. In my case a special stent had to be ordered from the only manufacturer who is in Australia. A pretty expensive piece of surgical equipment to be installed in me so I could avoid getting cut from stem to stern. The vA did not hesitate ordering it and as a result, I was only in the VA Hospital 3 days and recovery will take me only 3 weeks instead of 10 days in the hospital after surgery and 8 to 10 weeks at home recovering.
Again, I couldn't have asked for any better care anywhere and I am very thankful to the North Texas Veterans Healthcare System for the great care I have received and literally, for saving my life.
