nice find, did you find it near a waterway? what kind of signal did it give? how deep down? I'm a novice so any guidance you can give would be much appreciated. Thanks for posting, its always exciting to see something new.
 

Pretty sure what you have there would be considered a fish hook. Lots of examples out there that look just like that, in fact I think most larger fish hooks were square or round awls that were just bent.

Great find...Love those copper artifacts. Definitely could be in the process of becoming a fish hook, but the end opposite the hook looks extremely sharp. I think I would have selected that end to be my hook!! How about this....Maybe the curve was put in it to allow the user to put a little more pressure behind it when perforating.
