Hello All,
After a lot of brainstorming, trial and error, and experimenting with different ideas, I finally came up with a working solution for adding a custom external speaker to my WS6 Master Puck. Since I already had a spare upper stem and an HF2 coil, this project essentially gave me a complete second Deus 2 setup, which was not my goal from the start.
The Search for the Right Speaker
Finding the right speaker turned out to be the biggest challenge of the whole project. I spent quite a bit of time searching for a small, self-powered speaker that would fit within the limited space I had available. I even disassembled several compact speakers, hoping I could fit the internal components into a custom enclosure, but every attempt fell short because of size limitations.
Eventually, I found a speaker that looked promising. Around the same time, tnsharpshooter posted one he had found. Ironically, it was nearly identical to the one I had already located, but his appeared to have better build quality, so I ordered his recommendation instead.
The Design Goal
I was already using an RC Digs WS6 holder with the audio adapter plate. From the beginning, I knew I didn't want a speaker zip-tied, taped, or otherwise strapped to the stem. I wanted something that looked like it belonged there, with a clean, compact enclosure mounted directly behind the Digs holder.
The Build
1. Housing
After looking through several options, I found a small clear plastic box that was almost the perfect size for what I had in mind.
2. Speaker Installation
I carefully cut an opening so the speaker would press-fit into the enclosure. Once I was satisfied with the fit, I secured it with plenty of hot glue to ensure it couldn't move or vibrate loose during use.
3. Mounting
I painted the enclosure black so it blended in with the detector. To securely mount it to the back of the Digs holder, I installed two small metal strips inside the enclosure as reinforcement plates and riveted everything together.
4. Electrical Protection
While assembling everything, I noticed the exposed contacts on the back of the audio adapter plate could potentially short against the mounting hardware. To eliminate that possibility, I added a strip of insulating tape inside the Digs holder.
5. Final Assembly
Once everything was wired, tested, and working properly, I plastic-welded the enclosure shut to permanently seal the project.
The Finished Product
She might not be the prettiest build, but she works exactly the way I hoped she would. The speaker is surprisingly loud. Because it faces directly toward me, target responses are easy to hear, even in windy conditions or with ambient noise around me.
What started as an idea to make better use of a spare WS6 setup turned into a practical solution and gave me a fully functional second Deus 2 detector. That's what I enjoyed most about project. I was able to take an idea, overcome the problems I was running and ending up with something that's genuinely useful.
