Last weekend i got there with IFoundIt for a saturday hunt on a CW battlefield in VA.
After the farmer gave us the go ahead, we hit the firlds hard. After only a musket ball and enfield we moved out to some of the more "odd" spots.
an hour or so later i pried this bad boy out of the creek bed about 8 inches below the creek bottom.

i put it in an electrolysis bath for 36 hours and NOTHING! it's still caked in oxidation, powder, rocks, etc.
does anyone have any advice for me?

thanks

Deadhead Digger. Congrats on a great find! Now post that (if you haven't done it already) on the whit is it forum. When Cannonball guy sees it he can really help you. He watches that forum and is a great help on anything artillery. Tennessee digger

Your electrolysis is going to have to get to raw metal to work. I would get some advice as in if it is still armed with powder. And you may have to drill a hole to hit good metal for your machine if you have not already. Knock off all the loose you can.Watch the Video of Aqua Chigger on youtube clean a shell like yours. You might even try a couple weeks of apple cider Vinegar. I am doing some iron and iron shot as a test out of a creek with ACV. Seems to be working good but getting flash rust as soon as it comes out. It is slower than electrolysis.
Nice find on that shell. Congrats.
