A friend and I dug recently in all-metal mode in an area where I've found Civil War era musketballs. I found some additional items that are clearly from the 1800's, however, I have no idea what one of them is. I've included a picture of all of the keepers from the day's hunt (including a suspender buckle, a large square nail, and a small square nail) as a point of reference. The item I can't quite figure out is pictured individually as well. It seems to be a single piece of wire wrapped around itself with looped ends (one of which is broken) and tucked into itself on one end. It appears that it was used as a means of joining two other things together, but I have no idea what. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated!

That's very possible. I hadn't thought of that!

I have a buckle just like that with a 1909 patent date on it. If you look closely, there might be one on yours. Sometimes they're really hard to see.

I've looked the buckle over with a jeweler's loupe and can't find any writing, but it is covered in rust. I had to carefully remove plant roots growing through it for the picture. Where on your buckle is the patent info. I may try electrolsis to knock some of the rust off of it.

Old Pueblo, please try to get us a "definite" reading of the year in that Patent date. Thanks in advance.

Old Pueblo, I can see the patent date on yours. I used electrolysis and a toothbrush to clean up the one I have. I still see no writing or numbers on the one I have. I've included photos (2 from the top at different angles and 1 of the bottom) of the cleaned suspender buckle. To all who are helping with the "What Is This?" aspect of this post, THANK YOU. I have no idea what the double-hooped tie thing is, and your ideas are far better than my complete lack of an idea!
