I was able to get out yesterday to an area I hadn't hunted in awhile. Always turned up some keepers here and glad it didn't let me down.

Any ideas on that carved bullet with X marked on it? I always like trying to figure out what their intention's were. That other small carved piece of lead was found in the same hole as that percussion cap.It immediately made me think they might have been making a "lead" percussion cap. Any thoughts? Also, any ideas about the small brass staples? I haven't found/seem any of those before. I always enjoy the more personal items soldiers leave behind.

thanks for looking

Mike

I'd say the small lead is a nipple protector. Nice digs!

The carved bullet is a neat find. I do know what he was trying to make out of it but I like carved bullets.

Yep, nipple protector. Nice finds! I love finding carved bullets and lead. You know that a soldier held it in his hand and his mind was on something other than killing.

He had a reason for marking it. Wish we knew what it was, and why it was dropped. -Noodle

BB is correct. Nipple protectors were used to keep the nipple clean and dry. In many cases, the soldier would let the hammer rest on the nipple protector to relieve tension on the spring. I have found some that show the impression of the hammer on them. Good finds!!!

Awesome finds!

What units were in the area? Could be 10th something or another or 10th Corp? Just a guess.

Yeah.. That is what it looks like... cool.. nice small one!! All of the ones I have found are just regular bullet that were hammered on to the nipple..
