is the cz20 really worth the 300-400 bucks?? aslo maybe you guys can tell me is it better to get the 10.5 inch coil?? also for the price of the cz 20 would i be better off going with a PI detector?? would a PI detector work on land as well as one of the fishers?

OK let me save you time and alot of money here...
I have a cz-20 and I now have a Excalibur 1000(BEST OF THEM ALL) .... BUT I HAVE HAD A 1280-X,Beach Hunter ID, PI pro,dfx,idx pro,mxt..
IF you can get a cz-20 for $300-$400 get it!!.. I have not seen one for less then $575 I would not sale my cz-20 for less then $600. as for the 1280-x it is good for fresh water but for salt it is not the best..
Beach Hunter ID is a nice unit and it well work on the beash and wet sand BUT you have to ground Balance it everytime you move from wet sand to water and back again.
the PI Pro is great BUT you well dig every little thing on the beach (Iron) but it is a turn on and go unit.
the cz-20 is a very good unit but there again you have to keep the groud Balance when you move from wet sand to dry and back to water.
for the best of the turn on and go it is the Excalibur 1000 it has a iron mask and 37 ! frequencys not just one or two.. out of all the time and money i have put out I should have just went with the Excalibur it is very DEEP I found a Dime at 22" at the beach last weekend.. THAT IS NO B/S... BUT even the Excalibur well cost you $750 used to $1050 new and you have to swing it slower then the others... when it comes to the cz-20 -vs- 1280-x the cz-20 wins everytime...for both fresh and salt water... I hope this Helps you...

Hey thanks Morris is does help a lot. I went to the local MD store today and the guy basically told me the same. He has the excal 1000 so i'm leading towards that now. I'm used to a 1280 though i haven't used one in years. I guess i wasn't too clear I mean't is the cz20 worth the 300-400 EXTRA sorry for the confusion. Now I'm kinda torn between the cz20 and excal 1000 though. It seems tha some people on this forum have problems with theirs and the whole rechargable battery pack is not that appealing to me especially at 80-90 bucks for a spare. It seems there may be a way to use regular batteries in it but I haven't reseached that far yet. The lifetime warrantee is also attractive in the cz but i will probably end up with the excal, just because of the high recommedations I'm getting on it.

If you want a turn on and go mashine, you should go for the CZ20. If you are ready to change the stem, the knobs and are willing to send the mashine in for service once a year, then take the Excal. That's the experiences I've made. Happy hunting

ya I really have a lot of reasons to go with the cz but the fact that it is discontinued bothers me and I think the larger number and rangesof frequencies on the minelab plus the overwhelming support of the excal by people I've talked to still has me leaning towards them. The local store does not get their shipment of excals in til tues so I still have some time to figure it out.

I really like my CZ-20...very solid. The only thing it doesn't seem to do well is pick up small thin gold, like necklaces and bracelets. I have found small gold rings, but air testing on thin chains demonstrates my point. I've heard that not all CZ-20's are created equal, so it may just be my detector, but I have heard this gripe from others. I would take a range of sample targets and test both models on them...you know, like a range of coins, jewelry, etc. Good luck with your new detector, whichever you buy, and HH!

Ok IF you go with the Excalibur let me tell you this... IT IS A VERY HARD UNIT TO GET TO KNOW....
the cz-20 is a very good unit for both fresh and salt water hunting.. it is worth the extra $300 to $400
YES it is over the 1280-x.. the Excalibur he other post said you have to get other extra stuff to make it work for you.. yes that is true.. the Balance shaft off ebay would cost you another $80.00 extra pods cost you $50 to $80 for back ups.. it is worth all that money??? some say YES (EXCAL USERS) others say NO..(CZ20 USERS) I do have both and I am going to sale the cz-20 and I am going to ask $600 for it.. if you go with the CZ-20 ...
if Excalibur in my book is the top of the line...

Thanks guys for all the input. I have a tough decision to make but it seem like if i choose from one of these models I can't go wrong.

I own all these machines mentioned and use them. Between the Excal and CZ20 I favor the Excal. Mine has the rechargable upgrade Sun Ray Nickel Metal Hydride NIMH PAK which has been on the detector for five years and holds a charge about a week with every day use. Charges overnight too. I have read others saying they have had trouble with theirs, but I haven't. When I dive, for some reason I like the CZ and maybe it's because it paid for itself with the first dive. For beach and water hunting I only use the larger coil for more depth and coverage.

Morris is right about what he posted. I have used the PI's too at saltwater beaches and they are turn on and go, but you will dig EVERYTHING! The Tesoro Tiger Shark I use with the 18 inch Clean Sweep Coil to cover the area quickly and it does hold it's own at the edge of the salt water.

All these machines should be ground balanced except the PI's and Excal and 1280, but it only takes 5 sec.

thanks sandman. the tiger shark seems good but the adjustments you have to make inside volume ect seem like it would get annoying to me

well I took the plunge today and put a deposit down on an excal. I know it may be more complicated to learn, but the greater variation in tones, the larger search coil, and the fact that the cz20 has been discontinued were all contributing factors. I also got a deal with the 3 yr warrantee on it. It arrives tuesday so I will try to post a review when I get it to help others out that are struggling with the same decision. It was definitely a rough call but i think I made a good choice. Only time will tell I guess

Outstanding choice, I am sure that once you get the hang of it your new machine will more than pay for itself in relative short order.
