My father passed away 5 years ago and my mom is moving. She came across a box of his old coins so I was going through them and first one out the box is a 1796 penny. Beautiful coin. First Large cent I've ever held. There are shield nickles, IHP, Wheat pennies, Morgans SD, JFK Half dollars, paper money including a Confederate one dollar bill.
Also has a load of foreign coins and tokens. I was able to find a few online. Silver from Mexico, some Asian but most have George 3&4 on them. Last two pics is of foreign coins. One has Julius Caesar on the front. It's a nice big coin. May need to go to ID help page and see if I can get some help from you guys. Thanks for looking.

Those are some nice old coins your dad left you. I like that Large Cent.

was your dad Canadian?

Very nice large cent :occasion14:

No, not Canadian. 6th generation Floridian. I dont think there are many Canadian coins in the pile. Most European. Three of the George 3 coins are Hibernia(Irish) half pennies. Mid 1850's. Couple of Mexican silver. The one I thought was an old Roman coin I posted on "What is it?" Page. And Mackaydon figured out it was a replica of a Greek coin in about 30 minutes. It is worth about $400 because it's an 1898 token from the information he posted. Which is almost as much as the large cent is worth.

Good grief your dad left you a goldmine of coins.

Actually I thought there was more than that. I remember in the 80's he was all into the Mel Fisher treasure hunting thing and bought some silver and gold coins. I have a couple of the Spanish Reales. My mom says she was going to check their safety deposit box. Might be a gold mine in there. I know I sound money hungry but I'm not selling. Have a little stash of my own. I'm 50 and if my son doesn't show any interest in them guess I'll cash a few in at a time after I retire and use for vacations.

i ask because most of what you showed us would have been common mid 19th century in Montreal. I see a Wellington,3 un sous, British coppers, colonials, French, looks like a Rutherford, a Nova Scotia, a Newfoundland, and others.... a true mix of mid century Upper and Lower Canada. Believe it or not even Greek and Roman coppers were passed up until the 1840's.

Even the Irish and Mexican also would have been very common. This really looks to me like a pocket full of Mid-century Montreal pocket change.

May have been? When my dad was young he was very close with one of his teachers as the story goes. When her husband died she had no children and gave my dad a lot of these coins. Her husband may have been Canadian or spent time there. My dad kept these for almost 60 years.

About to go through some more tonight ill post what I find.

Several Canadian

Congratulations on your inheritance. Hope your mom finds a load of Mel Fisher Gold and Silver in the safe.

Looks like treasure hunting runs in the family

Cool collection, love the Liberty Cap cent!

Like Mackaydon my eyes were also drawn to the cast copy of the Syracuse, Sicily Tetradrachm, but I don't see the reverse, is it dated 1898 or something? Thanks for sharing!

Here is reverse. Interesting coin/token.
My first thought was how in the world did my dad get a hold of 2400 year old coin. Too good to be true.:laughing7: The Roman numerals at bottom equals 1898.
