A person here mentioned Davis Creek obsidian.
California Rainbow Obsidian Is a Natural Wonder (Photos)

This is not that far of a drive from me.
Are there any other places that have colorful obsidian like this?
Is this stuff valuable to modern knappers?
Thinking of making a road trip, it would be an excuse to get out.

Anybody familiar with the pits? Are they worked out?

You looked it up good for you. Fantastic peacock, rainbow, and other varieties.

Near me is a place called Glass Butte. It also has a fantastic array of obsidian, but the obs at Davis Cr. is truly beautiful. I am sure it would be desirable to knappers, not sure of availability or access. Maybe you can go and tell us all about it.

I know my mom would love to have a couple chunks to place around her yard.
Maybe a family road trip.

Do a little research and preparation before going. High clearance vehicles are almost a must, as the Forest Service does little maintenance on the roads. Also, you will need a permit (free when I was there last) which tells you how much obsidian you may collect, where you may and may not collect, and other information. I think the trading post still issues permits, but things do change. Beautiful stuff with great potential in the hands of experienced lapidaries.

Time for more coffee.

Yes, Davis Creek is vdry desirable to some knappers. Some won't knap glass but I do. Would love to make that trip one day.

If I make it over there late spring, I'll report back.

If you make it over walk the ridges - meadows and clear cuts above Davis Creek Store you might find some obsidian already made into points . Artifact Jack and me hunted that area love the Warner Range .

Did you guys find any points made from the rainbow material?

I met the owner of the Davis Creek mine a few years ago when attending the Tucson rock show. He was up in Phoenix at another friends home. I gave him a few pointers on shooting a longbow and in return he gave me a large boulder of very nice Rainbow. When cut right the colors are really nice looking.

No points of rainbow obsidian .
