It's an average dump, not too early. It's in the woods and has new and old stuff scattered randomly. It meanders, changes from late 1800's to mid 1900's. It took me and a buddy 3 hours to get these. The dump is not very deep, 2 or 3 feet, but it is widespread. Lots of trees and roots. We keep digging further and further, hoping to hit some older deeper stuff. The dump area is at the end of an old abandoned street that had houses in the mid 1800's but the railroad came in late 1890's and built tracks and a station nearby. They knocked all the houses down. We have dug out all the really good dumps we could find, so this is our next good prospect.

I like the ink bottle. What is this form called? I've seen a term -- "spindle ink?" ..."spool" ink? It may be a British term.

Covill just includes them (and many other interesting shapes) in "cylindrical ink bottles."

Harry, not sure of the term. This is a very small ink, 2.5" tall, 1.7" dia, one of the smallest I've seen. The color catches the eye on this one. First frost is tonight, season's almost over for me, but I'll keep at it till we get the first good snow storm.

I would go back and scour that place. Those are some nice finds there!
