As predicted yesterday the snow was 3" deep & it didn't stop until after lunch. I didn't think they would be out in it as most of the schools etc were closed. Dad rang me up in the late afternoon & wanted to see what was going on as he's been away for a few days & missed the start of the dig.

When we arrived we noticed they were there digging away, although they had time to do a snowman in the likeness of the digger driver with excellent attention to detail! :D

I went to see how they were getting on with the large 3 metre wide ditch. Dad wanted a go on the spoil heap with the detector. First couple of swings he had a lead token, 2 spoil heaps later a 17th century Buckle. These are the only finds so far to come out of the spoil itself. Only spent 1/2 hour & went home.

The big ditch is only half dug & will possibly be finished tomorrow when I'm back at work. :'(

Lead token are extremely difficult to date. I work closely with a guy who is working on a Lead Token Book. They can date from 12th century Ad - 19th century AD. This one looks about late 17th century/ early 18th century.
