Decorative piece of cast brass

Also found this Monday in my back yard. It is cast brass and is about 2 1/4" across the top. On the back in the casting is the letters, "J M I".
Any ideas what it might have once been a part of?

I to thought it was part of a fireplace.

It seems too small for a stove embellishment. I thoght it might be a "leg" from an old lamp or something....
