Researchers found Westport whaling ship wreck in Gulf of Mexico. How it connects to RI, MA

The brig Industry was built in Westport, Massachusetts in 1815. The whaling ship was destroyed in a storm off the coast of Louisiana in 1836.

Westport is about 10 miles from me and about the same from New Bedford, which was the largest whaling port in the US and inspired many great books including Moby Dick. Today NB has one of the largest fishing fleets in the US, usually challenged for that title by Gloucester, north of Boston where the movie the Perfect Storm was partially filmed.. NB has a great whaling museum and a seamen's bethel where hundreds of lost fishermen from the last two centuries are memorialized including a good friend's father.

Whaling life would have been a tough life that I could have lived without. Hats off to people who could have put up with being surrounded by stench, filth and serious danger for months or years at a time.
