I got this from a guy I know & am looking for better identification. I believe it to be a " gathering bag ." The pouch at the top is cone shaped & about 4" wide at the top tapering to a point at about 12" deep. Decorative leather " patches " are sewed to it as well. The leather neck strap is knotted to shorten it, as you can see. Much wear & patched in a place or two. Thanks for your help.

Frist thing that I can tell you from the photo is the fringe leather is not Deer skin. The bag may be, but the fringe is a modern time tanned leather. Would need more info on this, but from what I see it looks like a reenactment piece or a African item. JMO

what exactly would one gather in that bag?

Thanks. Will do some more research. May scan the bag & repost image to show more detail.

Looks to be something from Northern Africa, "Uncle Mac " is on the right track.

It appears to be a brain tanned ermine hide similar to a woodlands medicine bag that was worn around the neck, but the darker hide is modern as I detect the fringe has a shinny side to the hide for which we did not have a process for.
