Detector(s) used
Whites Eagle Spectrum
Primary Interest:
All Treasure Hunting
I took the detector out and worked part of a field I don’t usually visit… found some round balls, all different sizes, but no evidence of any structures or non hunting activity… the dark caught me on the other end of the field and as I worked my way back I hit this, I was thinking another round ball when the detector went off instead this popped out. I have a hunch what it is but so far I’m not finding anything really matching it. I don’t want to say just yet so I don’t lead others down the wrong path. I did work it over with a brass brush on a rotary tool, it was pretty crusty and even still has quite a Patina. Anybody know what it is?

Here’s the round balls… and .22’s funny how none are the same size.

My first thought was a barrel tap or plug and a small rod went through hole to help turn it

I thought a valve for some kind of tire, while looking for a match I saw the faucet valve stem too, it was the closest thing I could find, the only thing about that is this was found in a farm field never any plumbing ran out there… other thought I had was some sort of tuning peg… the string would go through the hole and the threads would allow it to turn… but then why hollow? And definitely missing the part you would use to turn… I’m still not sure but it definitely has a different patina than most copper things so I’m thinking brass.

Interesting piece. I can see what appears to be the remainder of a flute on the smooth, larger diameter, tapered portion. I can see that the smaller diameter part is threaded and it appears tapered too. The top of the threads are smooth, either from wear or they were made that way. I think I can see displaced metal around the outside of the smaller hole, like something was inserted into it and used to turn it. The piece does not have the appearance of being machine made, but the corrosion could affect the appearance. Tapering suggests to me that it was inserted into a hole and tightened by turning it. Fluid could flow through it lengthwise. The clear pictures really help.

Hi. I've found many small round balls. Civil war soldiers would use small round balls behind the Minie ball in there rifles to cause as much damage as possible. Similar to buckshot. Hope that is of some help

Asked a good friend of mine. He said round balls first. No chance of them falling out or causing the Minie ball to expand

Ok same caliber must be though ? Like a matching round ball amd a Minnie ball I see as super fatal but a small caliber round ball smaller than the Minnie not as much.
