I am discussing the news story here, nothing else. Please stick to the news story! It is no use discussing what should of been done nor if there is a treasure or not.
Looking at the story, it seems we have quite an issue here. The FBI came in, dug until they reached a certain level of depth, and then quit only to come back later with an army and dig up what appears to be what was buried there. Then showed the original finders the empty hole.
What the original finders of the treasure have is eye witness accounts. When this goes to court, and it will, they can subpoena them. Hopefully, they have photographic evidence as well to back up their claims.
IF I were the original finders, I would be gathering evidence and eye witness testimonies and preparing for trial while everything is fresh.
What the FBI has is unknown however, you can speculate they have some sort of evidence to back up their story.
Who owns the gold? Regardless of who originally owned it, there are statue of limitations as well as other legal points to be milled over. If there were gold there, it was located on state land. The FBI is a federal agency and unless they had legal authority from the state, what they did was illegal.
What now? It is a waiting game. IF I were one of the original finders, I would bring swift legal action BEFORE everything gets muddied up.
