Detector(s) used
White's Classic SLII and the E series DFX and the Minelab ExplorerII
My brand new shiny DFX is all covered with mud already. It works just fine. I took it out for a night hunt and we got to know each other
a little better.
The DFX is much more sensitive to targets and located many things my SLII didn't hear at all. (On that field).

Anyway. Who puts quarters inside poptops? ;)

I'm confused, N'sync isn't heavy metal so how your DFX picked up on that one I'll never get. hehehe :D
Just kidding, I truly am amazed at the number of people who feel comfortable with Whites DFX. I had trouble figuring it out for custom settings etc..But then I definately aint the sharpest tack. Great finds Ridley :-\ ??? 8)

Ridley, you will love your DFX. I've really got to start playing with some of the programming on mine. What program were you using when you found the 25 cent bottlecap?

Mike

Ridley, WTG. that secures my idea of picking up a DFX in the next couple of months ;D

I was using the High Trash program. I turned silent search (on). I turned the VCO (on). Backlight (on). I also turned the tone (audio frequency) way up.

The DFX sounds very digitized compared to older detectors. It's like the difference between 33 and1/3 records and CDs. I had no problem initially locating targets. I did however have some problems pinpointing them and finding them once I dug the plug.

I'm going to turn ratchet pinpoint (off) and turn down the DC sense a little. This may help with the pinpointing.

It's funny. Every now and then it acted a little like my SLII, but it's not the same at all, and it's going to take some getting used to. ;)

Visual Display Image... Whites Spectrum detector graphic showing numbers, graphs or Icons. A feature in which a visual (or graphic) indication is produced to help identify the target, its depth and possible size on a display.

In Ridley's case, His machine was showing him the number "84" which is the VDI number for a quarter. What impressed me is that the DFX wasn't bouncing around from the 50 range(bottlecap) up to 84. His machine just sniffed out the quarter wrapped in the trash and told him that there was a quarter under his coil.

Thanks StormTrooper154...
I appreciate the info and appreciate what the machine did.

Strange, I'd never seen that before. Tsgman

Ridley,
I'm glad to see you're getting that new fangled gadget figured out.

I just air tested it. VDI solid 84.

What does a cap read without a quarter in it? I'll bet your other machine would have seen this cap since it isn't really IDing as a cap but more like a quarter... Do you still have your other machine? Does it read the quarter in the cap as not a cap?

Yep if a DFX had told me it was a quarter and I dug a bottle cap, the honeymoon would have been over lol.

That's fantastic Ridley, a quarter inside the cap. I've seen coins in caps clutter in a person's console of their car before and thought, "they're gonna accidently throw that away."

I'm glad you and the DFX are warming up to one another. I guess it goes to show, have faith in that machine, she may not always be right, but she's never wrong LOL :P

The SLII would have read the target with the discrimination turned all the way down. Then it reads everything! This was deep though, so it may have missed this target anyway.

I just air tested the coin bottlecap with the SLII. Flipped with the quarter side up, the old machine sees it. Bottlecap side down it's invisible.

The DFX reads the cap alone as +15. It does jump around a lot, but +15 seemed to come up the most.

It was very muddy last night and I'm not sure how the B/Q was sitting in the ground. All I remember was the DFX said quarter and I went for it.

I would never sell my SLII! I plan to use it this afternoon. It's great at finding goodies in shallow trashy places. Plus it's extremely light and easy to swing.

Also please remember I've only had the DFX for one day. I've used it twice. So, there's some learning to do!!! ;)

Remember, with the silent search/ no audio threshold, you'll miss some deep targets that aren't strong enough to hear with the silent search. Those solid two way whispers that can only be heard with audio threshold on.

Good haul, though.

I occasionally have pinpointing problems, too. Turning on the tone ID and pinpointing in a cross pattern has helped me there. Go to White's website and get the free book they are giving away, "Understanding White's DFX" by Jimmy Sierra Normandi. I also recently purchased "Digging Deeper with the DFX" by Jeff Foster. I'm going to have to read it a few times to get the info to soak into my dense head, but it is a book I definitely recommend.

It does sound as if you and your DFX are going to become good friends.

Very cool find! It makes you wonder if someone was just fooling around when they lost it...... WTG :) I found one like that a few years ago. The funny thing about it was, when I picked it up and look at it I noticed that there was something strange about it. So I washed it off........... :o :o :o

As I laughed ....there was a face staring back at me!!! lol

You never know what your gonna find! What a great hobby!

Thanks for the advice Mike and Ken.

I went out again tonight and used both machines at a local school. I poked around the play sets with the SLII and then tried to find some deep stuff in a field with the DFX.

I took your advice, Ken and disabled silent search. The "deep silver" program really produced some good deep coins. I picked a spot that was searched out by my SLII as an experiment. Sure enough! There were all sorts of targets sitting there. (just beyond its reach).

The DFX goes way deeper. The pinpointing is getting easier too.

I love it! Quite the conversation piece!

WOW!! Thats a first.. great find. Gotta love those Whites, my MXT never misses when it registers "quarter" you can bank on it. ;D ;D

Hey Guys... Please Help me out a lil here...I'm looking for a MD

That DFX sound really nice for the deeper items.

Does it do just as nice a job on shallow items too?

Does it do a good job on rings ?

Is it made by Whites ? ... if not who.

I used to own a Whites 6000 di .... Is it similar in ease of use and septh as well? <~~ 2 parter

Whats the AVG estimated retail price of a new DFX.

Man o Man I cant wait to get one and have some dirt thaw.

Thanks in advance for your help!

The Whites DFX, MSRP is $1100. It has 6 turn-on and go programs and 4 spots for custom programs that you can write. It does well on deep stuff and shallow. Great machine!
