Acid scratch test for gold and silver...cheap off ebay, 15.oo.......as far as the diamonds, not really concerned unless I get a whopper..then I'll take that to the pro's. After you dig a little of all it's easy to figure out what you have.

Diamond detectors aren't expensive.
Look on ebay.
