It was threatening rain yesterday morning, so I did a little local sight seeing and visited a couple of local graveyards. About noon, the sun came out so I seized the opportunity to work on the sawmill cutting the siding I will be using on the Free Town Restoration Project. I had a pretty good day on the mill, as evidenced by the ever growing pile of slab wood. Here is what it looked like at the end of the day:

It doesn't look like much in the photo below, but there is close to 3000 board feet of lumber in these three stacks:

Now, you have to be wondering what this has to do with metal detecting? Well, while loading a log onto the mill, I knocked a chunk of bark off and just happened to notice something poking out the side of the log that didn't look quite right. So I jumped off the tractor for a closer inspection. After a quite a bit of axe work, it turned out to be two chunks of stranded wire affixed to a threaded rod. So I took my chain saw , cut a notch, and was able to extract the hardware from the log, and rolled it on to the bed of the mill. Then, to be on the safe side, I decided to roll the log back off the bed of the mill and scan it with my metal detector. Sure enough, I got a hit, and extracted another threaded rod from inside the log. I rolled the log over and scanned it and BAM .. a long loud hit right below a growth lump on the log. Again, I grabbed the saw and performed a lumpectomy. I hit something with the blade, which dulled it immediately, but at least I knew how deep it was. After resharpening the chain, I carefully finished the extrication .. an old, old, pipe wrench! The jaws are frozen up, but otherwise it's in great shape. I am hoping that by soaking it in Marvel Mystery Oil the jaws will free up .. here are the spoils! My trusty little antique Tesoro sure saved me on this one!
