Hello, All!

This is my first post, however, I am a frequent looker at this forum. It is very amazing and captivating what everyone finds.

I am looking for some information of a recent find, albeit, it was from an Estate Sale.

I am wondering if this is a Civil War ear holster and what the value might be?

What I see is the US Mark on front of the holster. There is another stamp into the leather "HA" on the front side near the bottom. On the backside is the stamp USN, BOYT, H-3. There is something also on the back that looks like HA in black, but can hardly make it out. Then, again on the front, it looks like someone etched in their name Don Stewart on the front. I got this with a browning Light 12 gauge shotgun.

Here are some links to the images of the holster and gun.

Definately NOT Civil War sorry to say.. (snap didn't exist then).. but, it could be as early as WWI.. made for a U.S. service revolver such as the Colt Model 1917 or S&W, and is a 'shoulder holster'. Browning Light 12 is a nice shotgun too! :-)

I know many pilots in the late 40's/50's in the AF carried .38's in a shoulder holster and I assume the Navy pilots did the same.Goodluck with the id.

Most likely World War I era, maybe WWII... Still a nice find and piece of history :icon_thumleft:

Wardaddy is correct.
Catfish too.

This looks like the U.S. M3 Holster worn in WWII.....later in Korea and Vietnam they were the M7.
It was designed for carrying the 1911-A1 45 Auto and for the S&W 38 Revolver (also the Colt Commando). They weren't around during WWI (the shoulder holster). The S&W and Colt 1917 was too large to carry under the arm (according to the Military). If you had enough Rank..... I suppose you carried whatever you wanted. During Vietnam it was a free-for-all. Because of the cartridge loops and the narrow form the holster has taken I would guess it was for the 38cal 4in Revolver. Almost every branch of the service had someone carrying them in a function of "Crewman or Pilot". I don't believe they were ever issued with the cartridge loops, that seems a little custom.... that would sure add to the discomfort.

Don Stewart portrayed Michael Bauer for 16 years on the CBS-TV soap opera Guiding Light. He was in the Air Force and then in the Navy and Naval Reserves. He flew jets off of aircraft carriers. Of course that is a common name, but who knows you should look into it. You can read his mini Bio at- www.imdb.com
