Lately, I have been having a hard time digging holes because the ground is so hard. Spent 45 minutes on one hole, maybe its because I'm using a regular hand shovel. Next time I go digging, I am going to bring one of those empty spray bottles that you use for cleaning and fill it up with water to loosen the dirt. Gotta get my trench shovel back from brother who borrowed it when he goes digging. Any automatic shovels on the market. That would be nice.

I am in Northern Virginia, Leesburg. A jackhammer might do the trick. Thans pkb

If you're hunting private property, see if you can soak it good the day or two before you hunt it. Public property.....you may have to wait for a good rain or watering before you try. Digging up hard ground in a park or school is just asking for trouble when the plugs die and leave craters everywhere.

You spent 45 minutes on one hole? I hope it was worth it

When I detect parking lots, I bring a rock hammer to break up the dirt/rocks AROUND the target, then dig into where the target is. It works really well, you just have to be careful.

I was thinking the same thing. Exactly how big was this hole? Did you drop a body in it?
