Diggin' up the King's property?
I was on a colonial era site the other day and had just about reached the exhaustion point with only a chewed musketball to show for it when my detector went over this. I was so tired that my swings were getting sloppy. The ax head was lying on a flat rock just an inch or two below the surface. I am certainly no expert but my first impression was that it is a trade ax of the period. I immediately could make out a mark on the side in the shape of an arrow. That arrow was vaguely familiar but I just couldn't quite put my finger on it. After a little research I'm guessing the ax is a belt ax and the touchmark is that of the English broad arrow, placed on any property belonging to the Crown or that which the Crown wants to claim.
