I spent todays afternoon on the trashiest site i have when it comes to roman nails. As Cru said often: 'Clear the nails.' And that was what i did.
Some i brought home, most of the bend and broken ones i left in a ditch at the field.
A couple scrappies turned up along with two buttons and a broken buckle. One coin and the french button were worth cleaning and waxing to bring out more detail.

Love the photo progression!
I've yet to do it, but I've seen people attach large magnets to their rakes, and initially sweep the area.
Those nails might take some serious pulling to get off, however.
Kudos!

I'm one of those strange folk that get satisfaction from clearing junk & I've lost count of how many coins & artifacts were in the same hole as a nail. I use the clearance process as an indication of progress. If you don't clear some of the nails each plough, your never get a true picture of how much is coming up & going down.
Anyways, well done on the finds & I would still put that effort in that you did to improve yours chances in the future.

Nice saves Westfront. Congrats

Those coins are awesome, congratulations! :icon_thumleft:

Great coins! :icon_thumleft:

Thanks Guys! :occasion14:

Nice score Lu. What is the thing just to the right of the .50 cal. slugs? Driving rings? There were some bigger ones in your last junk post. Most of the driving rings I've seen you post are continuous, these seem to be missing some. The kind of look like a stretched out watch band. Good luck.

Jep, small driving band fragments Tim. Only a couple of them left here because we hunt this site for a couple years. The other site we detected still has lots of them including the wide bands of the AP tank rounds. :occasion14:

Very nice finds.Congrats :icon_thumright:

I love when you all find the old stuff on the other side of the ocean...your in a 1600ish time frame with id... I'm hoping for early 1900s or possibly 1800s.

Congrats.

I can just see it now. In a few hundred years there will be a detectorists getting all excited. He'll be saying to himself, " I just *KNOW* I'm close to something big!! There just HAD to be a building in this ditch once! Look at ALL the nails!!!!" :tongue3:

Thanks! Most sites we hunt 1600 is fairly modern as we mostly hunt roman sites. The roman coin is acouple years older.

In fact, thats what happens often to us. In times the farmers worked the land with drafthorses the roof tiles of the roman houses were troublesome so they picked them up and threw them in a copse somewhere. These were cultivated later and now we have signs of a roman settlement in the middle of a field and it was just a dump. So it's only fair to leave the same for future generations. :laughing7:
