Not sure if this is an artifact. There appears to be evidence of pecking in some spots.

How did you acquire it?

River worn. What appears to be pecking is the result of minor impacts with other stones.

Time for more coffee.

Crazy , never seen any petrified wood look like that did you find it ?

I found it about 30 yards from a little Creek where run off eroded it out of the ground.

Cool piece that is an amazing shape

I can’t say that it’s an artifact but, it’s some beautiful material!

It looks like a really nicely polished chunk of gneiss. It was used and collected by Native Americans because it made such pretty tools.

Yours is probably just a river polished rounded cobble, but it have also been a burnishing or polishing stone. Any tools found nearby?

Very cool find! :occasion14:

It looks like orange and black quartzite to me, but not positive. Gary

An interesting find.

Like joshuaream indicated, paint us a picture of the find area and any other relics found nearby. The context of the find can help determine the validity of the find.

Describe the waterway and the surrounding lay of the land. Are there a single rise, or multiples? Does this waterway flood?

Describe the soil. The soil conditions and manner of relic hunting in Missouri can be, and often are, different than in Indiana.

Looks like a few pieces that I have picked up on sites I hunt up here.

I would be hanging on to it for sure.

I have found 3 points and a drill in the creek

I would keep that stone...

It's a small feeder creek that sits in the second rise of three. It is part of a massive 5 mile long river ridge along the nodaway river just north of Clarinda Iowa. The soil is very rocky. There is a lot of chert in this particular area. I wouldn't say that the creek is capable of flooding but does run high water with copious amounts of rain.

While it is a nice stone, there is nothing on it that says it has been used or worked by man.

I'm not trying to argue or anything like that but could someone show me some images of what a pecked artifact that has been polished looks like.
