i got a pretty large pile of copper and brass saved up by now. i dont do HEAVY METAL becuz i dont currently have a truck. i have been to a scrap place many times but mostly i was just interested in getting rid of larger stuff ASAP and the price i got paid was secondary, then.now, id like to get the best price possible for my stuff. and it will al;l fit in a car.if u go to a scrap yard ,can u say u want a quote on what they will offer u? or once they weigh it and all u have to sell to them.can i tell them upfront im getting at least 3 quotes b4 i sell.? or they might not want to bother weighing it if they knew upfront. also the many stories of weight fraud scare me. it might help make them more honest if u say. geez, i was just at xyz company and they said it weighed 48 lbs and ur telling me 39. is there any advantage to saving up a bigger batch. do any places pay more per unit of weight if u have over a certain amount.? sorry so many questions but it took a lot of scrounging to find all this and i want to do it right for max gain.thanks in advance. S.....

The yard wont weigh it for a maybe sale;.
your wasting your and their time.

You should know about its rough weight anyway just by looking at it or holding it. Use a bathroom scale.

Ring up each week as prices change .

When u ring up , tell them about how much u got to get an accurate quote.

Because your not a regulsr customer and your amounts are maybe chicken feed to them u won't get special prices

of course im going to call first and ask prices.that would be pretty obvious.just trying to find a way to kepp them from fudging the weight ANY.also grade switchingif i dont know number 1 metal from number 2 im gonna get le$$.

I get paid more then your average customer because I bring in alot more scrap. It works out yo about 35.00 to 40.00 a ton for scrap steel. Right now I am laying back all my copper and brass because I think prices will be up by Jan. I weigh all my brass and copper before going to the yard, but I do not have a big enough scale to do the steel.

I'll echo what others have said, don't even think of going to a scrap yard's scale for an estimate weight and not follow through with the transaction, you will be laughed at as soon as you leave the scalehouse.

The prices on material fluctuates everyday if not everyweek, you can't be in this business and be paranoid if their scale is off.. as has been mentioned elsewhere on this forum, the scales are regulated by the state or the business and there are huge fines for the companies involved if they are tampered with and they are usually inspected on a regular basis.

Most places will allow what's known as a trial load, you take a small amount in and see what you get, that's what I've done.

I also get paid more for some types of scrap because I'm bringing in 400-600lbs every two weeks.

Like anything else, gotta put your dues in

Speaking of earning your dues, I allways give a couple of the boys in the scale shed some beers when its hot. As u can imagine it has some benefits.
I also give them a hand emptying out my boxes of scrap after weighting, into their containers.
I don't just sit back and watch them sweat.
It pays to wear protective clothing / boots / maybe a hardhat, when u enter the yard with lots of dirt/grease on u and maybe a bloodstained rag wrapped around your hand .

A few weeks back I posted about "making" and "giving birth" to scrap and "seeding".
One of my motto's is "scrap is not just where you find it, it's where you MAKE it". This will make sense when u read that earlier post.
