I live in a rural part of Iowa. Here in the small towns each spring we have what we call junk days. This is were everyone in town throws out the junk they do not want. It is a hayday for scrappers but they must wait until the week is over to pick up what they want, of course most dont including myself but I use alot of what I take and only scrap stuff I know doesn't work. There will be fridges, lamps, and other goodies. I personally take what I can use on my farm like buckets and rope. My wife loves going out and finding stuff with me. Do other places have something like this?

Not here in Chicago but the day before garbage day we have "scrappers/junkers" that cruz the neighborhoods for scrap metal. The city and surrounding towns don't care as whatever they take is less for the landfill. Plenty of times if you have a lot of metal or a frindge that you don't want to lug to the curb you put something small out on the curb and when they stop waive them over and they will haul it off. You can't miss them as they have a 1/2 ton truck with 10 tons of scrap stacked 10 feet tall on them. LOL

Semper Fi fellow Marine. I scrap on occasion, I have a whole machine shed half full of scrap I need to take in. Ya scrappers will do anything for a piece of scrap, I do know of some that wont even come around unless they can fill a trailer. I have been meaning to ask you about your avitar, its cool and what is it? I see lady liberty but what is it on?

Oh man the guys around here go up and down every street several times a day and will stop for anything - once I dragged a rusted out 500gal fuel tank to the curb and by the time I got to my gate a guy stopped. He almost killed himself trying to get it in the bed of his truck so I went up and helped lift it in and that was HEAVY!!! I also put a few small pieces of conduit 24"- 36" long and a guy stopped and grabbed them. LOL They are all independent and not for a company, I don't know how much they make at the scrap yard but it has to be worth it after the junk truck and gasoline costs.

Its a 1940's Boy Scouts neckerchief that I found. It says "Strengthen the arm of Liberty". Its a special one that was created when the Boy Scouts had a fundraiser to literally strengthen the arm of lady liberty, the money they made was donated to add structural steel to her arm that was sagging and had a bulge under its own weight.

Scrapping is a hell of a business, it can be kind of like the stock market. Sell high buy low type stuff. A couple years ago when I first got into it I had a guy come to my place and help get rid of some junk on my farm when I first moved in. We split the cash 50 50 and ever since then I was hooked. Back then though metal was really high because of the market and asia rebuilding after the tsunami. That is when alot of people started scrapping. At the moment scrap is around half the price it was back then. I am more of a part time scrapper but I know some guys that do this for a living and there is lots of money in it if you do it right. I could go on and on but I better stop here or else I might write a few pages.

That boy scout neckerchief is an awesome find. HH and Semper Fi

Thats interesting, I figured there was money in it for people to do it, like I said around here they use beater trucks that would never pass an emission test so I guess they only use the truck for 1 season then scrap the whole rig on the last run to the scrap yard then buy another truck and do it all over again.

They have the junk days around near me, my brother in law and I were out one time and found a almost new floor jack, the guys old lady must have been po at him or something. We also got a really nice portable basketball backboard and hoop, after the fact I was thinking about it and it was in a culdesac and was probably some kids......woopsie I guess they had to get a new one!

Woops! It is coming up in may. I cant wait to find some treasures!
