2011_031423march0071.webp I salvage old boards from demolished buildings to make furniture. Somewhere along the way I found this old carving in a granary board. Guessing mid 1800's.
Any takers?

Was the 8th N.Y. Calvary in your area?

Not sure, recondigger. I live in Lancaster County, PA, not far from where the bridge over the Susquehanna was burned because of advancing Confederates....Hayden I would recognize as a first name, Hanyden just doesn't sound German enough for around here.

It's probably the location of a buried treasure and we can't figure it out.

H. Snyder. ?

...except that is definitively an "8" and not an "S".

There also looks to be a small "x" by the H, like H[sub]x[/sub].

When I enlarge the picture I see smaller letters underneath the 8. Looks like BALL to me? Anyone else see that?

Some thoughts,

The third character looks a bit like an "A", with an extra line.

The third character as an "N" is inconsistent in style to the last character, if in fact the last character is an "N"

The small "x"es might be periods.

That notwithstanding, I keep coming back to "Hayden", but can't explain the "8"
