I find these things all the time down at the river bank. I think there lighting rod insulators. With these two I dug up today that makes five I have found. I like how the two I found today still have the corroded wire going through it. Are these common? And have any of you ever dig these up? - Justin

How does a lightning rod insulator work? I thought the idea of a lightning rod was to conduct electricity to ground. I guess they could be stand-off insulators for the ground wire.

These appear to be insulators for certain.

First I have seen in that configuration made of glass. Next time I am the city I will look at some of the old buildings with lightening rods. Nice finds.

you are right the first time. They are indeed lighting rod wire insulators.they are used to hold ground wire away from house or barn. Good finds. Not worth a lot but collectable.

Never heard of, never seen, never dug.
I now just learned something!
I'm assuming too small to have any markings/patent dates?

Thanks everyone these are neat little finds. And no these don't have any marks on them. Any ideas on the age of these?

Don't remember the date but with a little research you can find when Hutter invented these and when people stopped using them.

Sorry I was thinking this was your Hutter thread, nevermind lol.

I've only seen those actually in use- and you bet they still are. I'm looking at properties in VA right now. In the country-side and up in the mountains all the houses seem to have them. I saw one home w/ 5-- count 'em 5! Yikes! (not interested in that home...) Cool find! Yak

I can imagine them still being in use I lived in a house in Maine where the power line was still attached to one of the big ones. Here's the other three I found I really like the color on them.

Some do have a patent date on the rim. Most of that type the copper wire went throw the hole and they attached to house or barn with metal screw in clamp. The glass looks like Hemingray glass.
