Dollar signal question?

I am new to metal detecting and got a question. I use a Whites M6. Everytime I go out I seem to get a solid hit on a dollar coin. The VDI reading is from +91 to +94 and the sound is smooth and clear. I pinpoint the spot, and it seems to be always 6"-8" down. When I start digging I check the hole and the plug and there is nothing there. Its like the target dissapears. Does this happen to anyone else? Why does this happen?

Sometims Breaking the Surface Disrupts the Signal.
& the object is Deeper.

It could also be you don't have your Detector set up Right.
and it's signaling on certain ground conditions.

I'm taking for granted when you say you recheck it's with your detector,
not just your eyes.

I'm not real familiar with your Detector.

What Controls does it have & what settings do You Use ?

Sounds like it may be Falsing

If you have or can get a copy of the MARCH 2007 Issue of W&E TREASURES their is a Field Test on it.

I'm Revieweing it now

Make sure Auto Track is ON.

And Try different Sensitivity settings.

Do you Find a Piece of Empty Ground,
Lower the coil to the Ground, & pump it up & down a few inches
a couple times ? after setting it Up ?

The auto track is on. I have the discrimination dial and the sensitivity dial. I adjust the sensitivity and it still seems to pick up these phantom hits.

re read My last post.
I added some direction Questions, Sorry

I do move it up and down to set the auto track.

It also says If the Ground is Infested with Rusty Trash, try the
Lock Off Position.

Find an empty space Pump the coil as before &
then Lock off.

HOT ROCKS

Do the Balance thing up & down Over the Rock
then Lock

I'm Sure
another M6 Owner here will help more when they see this.

Good Luck !

I will give that a shot. Is the MARCH 2007 Issue of W&E TREASURES online anywhere? I would like to read it.

the Cover can be seen if you Click the Icon on top,
But the Article isn't there that I see

If it only beeped on one pass, could be false signal. Good signals are repeatable.

You may have turned a coin on edge while digging, which would make the signal weaker.

You may have had a very tiny piece of metal near the surface & no longer in hole. The depth meter is only accurate for coin-sized objects. HH, George (MN)

That high of a signal is likely iron nails. You get wrap around from the halo effect of nails especially at deep depths.

I bought an M6 last August. My guess is that you have the sensitivity up too high. It's a very sensitive machine, so back that down a bit and see if that helps - even less than the recommended setting may be necessary.

Great machine - enjoy it!

I have a whites prizm V. It will read a pop can at 6-8 inches as a penny at 0-2 inches. Just a quirky feature. I like swing slow left and right, front and back to just get the edge of the target. If it is the size of a basball or larger it's always a pop can. A real coin could almost be over lapped side to side. Find a target like that and dig it up to see for yourself.

Probably a pop can that is reading a dollar signal at 6-8 but because of it's size the can is actually 12-14in or deeper. I have had this happen alot with different machines. Now when I get a repeatable solid signal and it telling me that its say 6in I dig that depth maybe alittle deeper. If the signal is still there the can is below my plug and I ignore it and move on.

The XLT does the same thing. Most likely a rusted bit a metal deep.I never could find out how to stop it.Just don't dig vdi 95.
