Don't Hunt That Site - Part 3

I went back to that site I was told wasn't worth hunting because it had been totally hunted out by our top THers and here's what I got.

More and in more I'm seeing that Indian cents are easy to miss.

This is part 3 and so far I've gotten 4 Indian cents plus loads of other stuff. I show only a small part of my digs here. I get lots of very old brass buttons that need cleaning to ID.

Happy Hunting.

Badger

Added Note: The Indian cent shown here just beat my all-time record for depth on a U.S. coin. This baby was just over 10 inches deep. To date the deepest was back in 1983 and that also was an indian cent at 9 inches.

Badger,
Great finds. I have a suggestion. To clean that Indian and leave the nice patina, get a regular white potato and cut a slit in it. Stick that coin in there for a day or two. You will freak at how much this helps. It only removes the crud and green stuff, but leaves you a nice natural coin. Be sure to clean it with a soft toothbrush in between treatments and afterwards. You will thank me later.

I do all my ugly wheats and have even done an Indian Head myself.

::) ::) ::) ;D ;D ;D ::) ::) ::)

Old news my friend, old news. I've been preaching the potato trick for almost a year now. I never recommend it on indianheads just due to the fact they are worth a little more than wheaties. Plus someone might try shoving a fattie in and it will come out with no details left.

Thanks, I've never heard of this before. I've heard of catsup, Worshire sauce, WD-40 soak, lye bath soak, rust cutting oil, heat and drop into ice water, lemon juice, ammonia, vinegar, baking soda with foil, hot sauce, spit and foil, electrolysis, rock tumbler, sulfuric acid, powerwasher, water soak, vacuum bags with olive oil, olive oil, diamond tools, and a few other ways I can't recall right now.

But somehow I missed the tator method. I'll have to try it on some coins.

Thanks,

Badger

MB-- you and that Tesoro are smokin' hot!! ;D
I'll have to try digging some of those deep iffy signals. Was at a
lake cabin over the weekend and found out a foot or more of fill was added in the 70's.
lots of deep signals--some good enough in other circumstances I would have dug-- not
at someone's nice cabin property !!

Nice dig's MB....I've been taking some mental note's on some good hit's/reading's but it's just too damn dry here, like diggin through a brick....Gotta stay with the shallow hit's right now.Hope to see part 25,best of luck and keep diggin'.

Got idea, after the ground softens some go back and dig those dip signals.

Here in Michigan we have that easy sandy soil so digging in most areas is a piece o cake.

But lately I have found out that many of those super faint signals are great finds.

Badger
Thats what I've been doing lately. On my Cibola I've been listening to the faint one way clicks and spits and digging any that repeat. I also have been supertuning it and it helps. So far I dug that cool token and last night I got a couple wheaties that were just audible one way. Very interesting!!!!

Yes, this is the way we hunted back in the 60's with those old TR machines. I got away from this method due to so much talk about super depth these days. Now I'm back to this method for keeps.

That indian cent I dug was really 10+ inches deep. On the surface it sounded just like a tiny bit of foil in the sod. I hunt in discrimination set on FOIL so most foil gives a broken signal. Because this signal stayed smooth but just barely hearable I decided to dig down a couple inches and check it again. At 3 inches down the signal was solid coin sound all the way.

Just before I dug it dead center in the hole I was at 9-11 inches on my shovel. I'm thinking it was close to 12 inches deep. Man, these Tejon's are deep.

Many early very deep wheats and indians I've dug first gave a signal very much like discriminated iron. That sort of blunt broken signal you hear when the Tesoro discriminates out a piece of iron. The difference being iron will usually hold in there if I raise the coil 5 or more inches. Deep copper coins drop off if I raise the coil only 2 or 3 inches and the signal is very tight (small).

Very nice finds Badger--You and that Tejon are one great combo.
I think you have mastered the art of metal detecting.

Right on Badge, one of the wheaties I dug was mixed with a wad of foil, thus the broken signal. It just kinda spit one way after I turned up the disc past tabs, so I figured I'd dig it-why not. Glad I did!!!! Gives me lots of ideas now on how to get those masked coins. Tesoro circuitry is fantastic!!!!!!!

Hey Badger sounds like you have it figured out. Hope to read more in the coming weeks about all the IH's and wheats you are finding. I'm hoping you find some old nickels and dimes! :D

Thanks much!

Where in Western Michigan are you? I spent most of my early years down there. Once lived and worked in Grand Haven and Spring Lake. Very nice area and back when detecting was new there were many great detecting opportunities as well. I still recall when one could detect central park in downtown Grand Haven. The guys really made a hual there. I'll bet there's still loads of stuff in that park.
