Beware of temperatures between glass and the water that you will be washing your bottle in.
Beware of temperatures between the outside air and the inside air when moving your bottles about.
Nothing deflates my balloon more than losing a bottle to temperature change.
Fall and winter digging are the most likely time for "catastrophic failure".

Thanks for making me aware of this issue. I did read something earlier in the week regarding this matter though.

Thanks for giving me a gain from your loss. Sorry that happen.

I lost an expensive bottle of bourbon due to this phenomenon, tough lesson and great reminder.

Thanks for the heads-up.

This spring I had a large whiskey bottle explode in my hands(still have a piece of glass in my finger). Now I know why. Thanks for the information. Sorry you lost a cool bottle.

Have you seen the wine cork removers that have a needle and air tank?Inset needle pressurize bottle till cork pops out. Neat to watch but such a bad idea. Last year a friend was opening a bottle with one and it blew up in her hand. over 50 stitches and a bloody mess. I threw mine away

My mom had a bit glass apple. They used to sell vinegar in them. She took it our archaeology club once, was bringing it back into the house, it was this time of year. The second she got into the house it literally exploded. I can still see it in my head.

Indeed no fun. play it safe both for yourself and your find.

I am very lucky , never had a problem with this kind f breakage . Been digging and handling bottles for decades and will always wear glasses and gloves for sure now...... sorry for all your losses.....

This also happens when you remove the bottle from a cool ground to warm air or vice versa...:BangHead:

I always bring a few various sized towels when bottle digging, if I find a good bottle, its wrap up to have the temperature and humidity change very slowly... finally stabilizing to its unearthed environment. :icon_thumright:
