Finally decided to stop at an old house I drive by all the time and ask for permission to detect. After talking with the owners for a bit, I got the go ahead. They weren't sure exactly when the house was built, but I'm pretty sure it's early 1800s. Apparently there used to be parties/graduation ceremonies in the yard, as the house was affiliated with a local school system.

I've made 3 trips there over the past couple of days and needless to say I'm a little disappointed. Besides 2 wheaties, I didn't find a single older coin. It's a fairly large yard and I gridded it multiple times but just can't seem to find anything older than the 1940s :icon_scratch:.

I can definitely believe that there used to be parties at the house. I have never found so many pull tabs at a single property. Pictured are the 45...yes, 45 pull tabs I found along with a bunch of bottle caps. I try to dig everything at these places cause you never know what you're going to find. Hard to believe I passed up around 50 other pull-tab type signals along the way.

I got another pull tab signal that was definitely more solid and repeatable than most of the other ones. I finally ended up digging one of the only rings I've ever found, and it turns out to be a 10K men's class ring from 1973. It has the initials inscribed on the inside and I hope I can track down the former owner...

Found a ton of clad, and most of it was pretty deep. Just wondering if the old stuff is too deep for me to find, or if it's something to do with the soil conditions here. This marks the 2nd time this summer I've hunted a really old virgin site, and the 2nd time I've been pretty much skunked in the old coin department.

Also found a duck.

Nice ring! !!!

I have come across those yards too, it's aggravating. Look at the positives--you received permission, and found a gold ring! Track down the owner of that ring and I guarantee he will let you detect his property lol!

Your perseverance paid off. Great find on the ring.

Go dig those other 50 pull tabs, it might open up some other signals that were being masked. Hit it after a soaking three day rain. I firmly believe that most people in the old days did not lose there silver, a dime, nickel, or quarter went a long way back then. Silver dollars and half's bought allot more then what most people nowadays can even imagine. I'm not that old and I can remember going with a dime and coming home with allot of candy in a little brown paper bag.

Still looks like a few good finds, especially that ring, don't give up yet!

persistence pays off, eventually. very nice ring and good luck on the return. I cleaned out about sixty pull rings/tabs out of a spot the other day, got really old but it only takes one gold to "refresh" you and you keep doing it. go back and dig those other signals, you may just add to the gold list.
