Welcome to Tnet
Very nice first find... congrats
1780s-1830s....used much longer.
This type of metal button started to fall out of favor in the 1820s. HH

Should I clean it. If so how. Or not. Thanks again

Sweet I'm really made up with this find. Is there a value to it. Not that I'll be getting rid off it. As this is the oldest find so far. Well happy woohoo
Thank you very much

You can clean it if you like ...it`s your find
Those buttons are common finds in or around old cellar holes and fields....working man's clothes.

If I clean it will it take some of the gold off.
Many thanks for your expert advice and help

Those buttons with gold on them are called Glit Buttons
Cleaning might strip some of the Gilt off the button.
Try a little Warm... hydrogen peroxide.....microwave some in a glass bowl to very hot not boiling and put the button in for 1 minute.....do this a couple of times till you get the look you like .
Then seal it with something like wd 40 to stop any further erosion.
Gary

DON`T PUT THE BUTTON IN THE MICROWAVE !!!
