Took a break from painting today and went to the site of an old mill that I used to hunt years ago. Didn't have much time, so I hunted the opposite side of the creek where the shortest section of the old mill dam is. Didn't find much, other than usual junk, some old iron, and a rather large military projectile. It's def. larger than a .50 cal. Oh yeah, I was swinging around the base of a large tree, looked up and saw that it had someones initials carved in it. thought it was pretty cool, so I took a pic of it. Thanks for looking, Bryant 2-7-15 001.webp2-7-15 002.webp2-7-15 003.webp2-7-15 004.webp2-7-15 005.webp2-7-15 006.webp2-7-15 007.webp2-7-15 008.webp

Interesting finds! Congrats!

It's nice to see water that's not frozen.

Your projectile looks very much like a 25 mm. I have a dummy round from a Harrier that I just checked in my own hand for comparison. The projectile appears to be a match. HH

Oh yeah, if any of you guys have any idea about the large bullet, please let me know. It measures approx .830 at the brass band and 3& 3/8 in. long

that is one hell of a slug, pretty neat.I wonder what it was doing there? Are you close to a military base or something?

I was hunting near MCAS Cherry Point. Lots of Harriers here. Thanks man!

Yeah man, MCAS Cherry Point. It's not uncommon to find the .50 cal stuff around here, But that one kinda threw me for a loop. I started whacking it on my shovel, and then saw the the brass band on it. I thought to myself, "you dumb a**, This thing might be explosive"

That's pretty wild, might have to be carefull digging around there:laughing7:,never know what you might come across. That sounds like a place that might have allot of rich history.

If it's 25mm, then it got corroded up fairly quick unless it was sitting in water. 25mm came about in the mid 80s, prior to that the Harriers flew twin British Aden 30mms.

I don't know man, It was about 4 in. down. As eat up as it was, my initial thought was WW2 era. It was not down in the swamp, it was up on a sand ridge. All I know it's bigger than the .50s we find around here.

Interesting, from the corrosion I would also assume it's older than the 80's. Might be that it's something else, WWII era maybe :icon_scratch:. Here are pics of my dummy in hand and a comparison to a .50 cal projectile I dug a few weeks ago. HH

Have you ruled out 20mm? Before Harriers, Cherry Point was home to A-4s which used 20mm.

Boy, that brings back memories! I was hunting with my Marine buddy ( now retired) and he found one similar to yours, totally whole and live! He called E.O.D. in, and they came out and removed it

20 mm is highly likely

Man I miss seeing the A-4s flying around here! Naw man, could be Vietnam era. Took another measurement. .830 at the brass band and 3.335 long. To crusty to get a decent dia. measurement on it other than the brass band
