Normally I don't comment on private tests I've done. Since JD has already given a pretty blunt account of the test, and since several people have asked, I'll describe what we did.
The test was this past weekend, at JD's home town, in a park he selected. I brought 6 short pieces of 1x12 wood, each ~9 inches long, to use for concealment. They were placed ~10 feet apart on the ground. I brought my 10-ounce 99.99% gold bar as a test target. JD also had a silver half.
JD scanned the area first, and was satisfied that there were no interferences that would bother him. We did a single full-view test, to ensure that the LRL gave a decent response. Then, while JD stepped away, I placed the gold bar under a randomly selected board. When JD came back to search, I stepped away from the area, probably 20-25 feet. I gave him all the time he wanted.
We did three tests like this. Between each test, we made adjustments to the setup to try to improve the response of his LRL, including adding the silver half as a target. JD has already described the end results.

I am still offering to hold a VA/NC LRL meeting. It can be informal, where everyone can demonstrate their techniques in whatever way they wish. For those who want to try it, I will conduct some standard testing. This is an excellent opportunity for all of us to see whether LRLs are of any use, in a relaxed setting.
Those who don't want to come, are welcomed to criticize this novel concept, generally bash any test method they feel will not produce a positive result, and heckle anyone involved. Or, if you have any positive suggestions, that would be nice, too.
