Hi guys, found this a few months back in a field in Hertfordshire, england, anyone seen one of these before? It's probably not that old but I could be wrong. IMG_20181117_003608.webpIMG_20181117_003546.webpIMG_20181117_003521.webp

Yes, definitely a 19thc Snake Belt Hook.
Here's one I found last summer.

Nice find,
Dave

Thanks for your question Rob.
This came from a c1830 homestead site 30 miles east of Toronto.
Dave

"Prior to detecting a site for the first time, I will often do a field walk and take photographs of the area. I do this in an attempt to capture imprints of the past lives that I feel often linger here. I realize this might sound corny, but once I start finding the processions that the settlers lost so long ago, I feel an immediate connection to them. This site had been gone a long time and proved a challenge with all of the modern trash mixed with iron. My first find was a holed circular medal of some sort, upon cleaning later at home it turned out to be a Matron Head US Large Cent (c1816 – 1839). The next find of interest was a 19thc ‘Snake’ Belt Hook; the pocket watch winder followed this, which is a first for me." - June 2017

Pretty sure this is a late 16th C example, they fell out of fashion in the 17th C & then started up again until modern day.
