I picked up this 1 ¾” long x 3/4" wide stone along the shores of Pymatuning Lake (Western Pennsylvania) when I was just a kid in the early 60s. What caught my eye was the 1/8” diameter hole drilled straight through it. I imagined it hanging around the neck like a pendant on some Indian and stashed it in my box of ‘treasures.

The time has come for me to settle the big question…is it an artifact?

Thanks for looking!
Nick

My guess would be not. The hole looks natural from where I am sitting.

Thanks, IlliniGuy. I didn't think that a piece of sedimentary rock like that would be worth anyone's time drilling. :sadsmiley: Maybe I'll loop some string thru the hole and wear it around my neck anyway to ward off any more snow storms this winter. :icon_thumright:

Wildcat - I agree with Illniguy. Probably there was a fossil, maybe a crinoid or some other plant stem that created a soft spot in the rock which weathered away faster than the surrounding rocks. Definitely can't leave that rock in the wild. I'd have brought it home as well.

Just another "Holey Rock". :laughing7:
